What Is SomatoEmotional Release (SER)?

A whole-body approach within CranioSacral Therapy
SomatoEmotional Release (SER) is an approach developed by Dr. John E. Upledger and Dr. Zvi Karni as an extension of CranioSacral Therapy (CST). It explores the relationship between the body, physical tension, bodily sensations, and the emotional aspects of our lived experiences.

Our bodies respond to the many experiences we encounter throughout life. Physical strain, injury, stress, and significant life changes can influence how we experience our bodies. Within the Upledger approach, SER offers an opportunity to bring gentle awareness to these experiences through light manual techniques and attentive, client-centred care.

SER is a body-centred approach, not talk therapy. Rather than relying on conversation to explore or resolve emotional concerns, the focus is on gentle, hands-on CranioSacral Therapy and awareness of the body's responses.

A Whole-Body Perspective

An important aspect of the Upledger approach is recognizing the body as an interconnected whole. Although a session may begin by addressing a particular area of physical tension or discomfort, SER-informed CranioSacral Therapy considers how the body may respond as a whole, rather than viewing each area in isolation.

This approach allows space to notice connections between bodily sensations and patterns of tension, while respecting each person's individual experience. The intention is to support body awareness and the body's natural responses through gentle, individualized hands-on care. Every session is different, and no particular type of release or outcome is expected.

What Might a Session Involve?

As a Registered Massage Therapist, I draw on my additional Upledger Institute training in SER 1, SER 2, Advanced CranioSacral Therapy 1 (ADV1), and Clinical Application of SomatoEmotional Release to inform my approach to individualized care.

SER-informed work takes place within a calm, respectful therapeutic environment. Using gentle CranioSacral Therapy techniques, I work with your comfort, presenting concerns, and responses throughout the session.

You may notice changes in physical sensation, relaxation, or body awareness. Thoughts or emotions may occasionally arise, but there is no expected response, and an emotional release is neither necessary nor a measure of success.

You remain in control throughout the session. Your consent, comfort, and personal boundaries guide the process, and you may ask questions, request a change in approach, pause, or stop treatment at any time.

A Gentle, Individualized Approach

My intention is to provide care that respects your individual needs, boundaries, and pace. SER-informed approaches are considered only when appropriate to your presenting concerns and my professional assessment.

My practice as a Registered Massage Therapist remains focused on physical health, function, comfort, and well-being. SER is not psychotherapy or psychological counselling, and it is not used to diagnose or treat mental health conditions. It does not replace medical care or other appropriate health services.

All treatment is provided within my professional scope of practice, based on my training and clinical judgment, with informed consent and respect for your autonomy.

You do not need to talk, share personal history, or arrive with a particular goal. The focus is on gentle, hands-on care and the opportunity to notice your body's responses in a supportive and respectful setting.
